SPC Lumen Grid is a standalone Windows clip launcher and looper built around hardware. You record synths and drum machines straight into a scene grid, perform the arrangement by launching scenes, process tracks with SPC CLAP effects, and hand finished clips or stems to your DAW.

This guide covers the whole thing in the order you will actually need it. Each section stands alone, so use the contents rail to jump.

The idea behind it

Most hardware workflows have the same gap. You have instruments that sound great and are immediate to play, and a DAW that is good at arranging but slow to capture a moment. Lumen Grid sits in that gap: record first, shape the loop, perform the arrangement, then hand it over.

The layout follows that. Tracks run down the left, scenes across the top, and every cell is a clip you can record into, launch, edit or replace.

Section 1: audio setup

Nothing else works until this is right, and it is the step most likely to trip you up on Windows.

Choose a driver type. Lumen Grid handles three:

Pick your inputs per track. Each track chooses its own input pair, so a Roland interface, a USB microphone and a loopback source can all feed the same session.

Set the buffer. Lower means more responsive playing and more CPU. Start moderate and reduce it until you hear problems, then go back one step.

Section 2: recording your first clip

  1. Arm the track you want to record on.
  2. Check the IN meter — it is logarithmic, so quiet signals are still visible.
  3. Set input trim so the loudest playing sits comfortably below the top.
  4. Click the cell you want to record into.
  5. Play. Stop when you have what you want.

The clip is now in that cell, at that scene position.

Set the tempo first if you intend to loop in time. Recording against the grid makes everything after this easier.

Section 3: making the loop seamless

A recorded loop almost never loops cleanly on the first attempt. This is where most looper workflows fall apart and where Lumen Grid spends most of its attention.

Trim to the grid. The waveform editor shows the tempo grid, so you can trim the clip to an exact bar length rather than by eye.

Normalize with a preview. Gain scaling is previewed live before you apply it, so you can hear the result before committing.

Design the seam. The XFADE control crossfades the end of the loop into its beginning, with independent curves for the End and the Begin side. Turn it on, adjust both curves, and listen to the loop point repeatedly until the join disappears.

The same seam is used by live playback and by stem rendering, so what you hear is what you get.

Apply as replace, or as a new scene. Edits can overwrite the clip or land in a new scene, so you can keep the original.

Section 4: performing with scenes

A scene is a column: one clip per track, launched together.

  • Launch a scene and every clip in it starts on the next musical boundary.
  • Stop uses a sample-exact loop-end countdown, so the scene finishes its loop rather than cutting off. Press stop again for an immediate stop.
  • BARS sets how many bars the launch waits for, and it persists.
  • The Scene Launch/Stop dock stays visible at all times.

Scene columns beyond your visible limit are still reachable through a themed right-click menu with Record, Play, Import, Edit, Resample and Delete.

This is the part that makes it a performance instrument rather than a recorder: you are choosing what happens next while the music is playing.

Section 5: mixing inside Lumen Grid

Every track has a full mixer strip — level, meters, and the controls you would expect. From track five onward the strips switch to compact Mode 2 rows with pinned controls and meters, so a large session stays readable.

PRISM Q is built in per track: a three-band EQ for quick tonal shaping without opening a plugin.

Track scrolling is independent vertically, and the scene lane scrolls horizontally in sync, so navigating a big grid does not lose your place.

Section 6: SPC effect racks

Each track has an eight-slot CLAP rack that hosts SPC plugins, and the summed bus has a FAT MASTER rack with eight more before the final output gain.

  • Racks open in track-coloured, resizable windows.
  • Plugin editors are movable, resizable and closable, and their state is recalled with the session.
  • Clips can be resampled offline through the exact rack state, with Replace or New Scene, and Keep or Delete Chain decisions afterwards.

Section 7: syncing with hardware

Lumen Grid speaks standard 24 PPQN MIDI Clock.

  • Internal master: Lumen Grid sets the tempo and everything follows.
  • Follow mode: it locks to a single MIDI input.
  • Forwarding: clock goes out to multiple USB and DIN outputs at once.
  • Start, Continue and Stop are supported.

Section 8: getting the audio out

Three routes, for three situations.

Drag to your DAW. OLE drag drops a clip straight into FL Studio. Fastest path for a single idea.

Render stems. Per-track or master, at 48 kHz, sample-aligned and cancellable. Scene and bar arrangements are persisted, so a stem render reflects the performance you set up.

Save the session. Saving and loading is atomic, so a session either saves completely or not at all.

Section 9: making it yours

  • 38 themes, applied across every window including the waveform canvas.
  • Track and clip palettes with explicit eight-colour sets.
  • Custom window chrome, with the minimise/maximise/close controls themed.
  • Persisted settings for output device, latency, startup behaviour and the maximum number of scene columns.

Themes are cosmetic, but on a screen you are staring at during a performance that matters more than it sounds.

Section 10: a session, start to finish

  1. Set the audio driver and the tempo.
  2. Arm track 1, set trim, record eight bars of a synth into scene 1.
  3. Trim it to the grid, normalize, set the XFADE until the seam disappears.
  4. Repeat on tracks 2 and 3 into the same scene.
  5. Duplicate into scene 2 and change one clip — that is your variation.
  6. Add an SPC rack to a track. Resample the clip through it when you like it.
  7. Launch between scenes and play the arrangement.
  8. Render stems, or drag the clips into your DAW.
