A loop is only as good as its seam. Everything else about a looper workflow is downstream of whether the join between the end and the beginning is audible.

Set the tempo before you record
If you intend to loop in time, set the session tempo first.
Recording against a known tempo means the trim step becomes exact rather than approximate, and everything after — scene launching, stem rendering, MIDI sync — lines up without further work.
Recording first and setting tempo afterwards is possible but it makes every subsequent step harder.
Step 1: trim to the grid
Open the clip in the waveform editor. The tempo grid is drawn over the waveform, so you are trimming to musical positions rather than to a shape you are guessing at.
- Trim to an exact bar length — one, two, four or eight bars.
- Put the start exactly on the beat, not slightly before it.
- If the performance drifted, trim to what is musically right and fix the rest with the seam.
A loop that is a few milliseconds too long or short will drift out of time with everything else, and the drift compounds every repetition. This step is worth doing precisely.
Step 2: normalize, with the preview
Gain scaling is previewed live before you apply it, so you can hear the result before committing.
Use it to get clips into a consistent range so the mixer starts from a sane place. Leave headroom — see what is headroom — and remember you can raise a clip later but you cannot recover a clipped one.
Step 3: design the seam
This is the part that separates a loop that works from one that nearly works.
Turn XFADE on. It is an explicit, glowing on/off control rather than a hidden setting, because whether a loop is crossfaded is something you want to know at a glance.
Shape both curves. The End and Begin sides have independent curves. That matters because the two sides of a seam are rarely symmetrical: a decaying tail needs a different shape from an attack.
Listen to the join, repeatedly. Loop the clip and listen only to the moment of the join. Adjust until you cannot identify where it happens.
The crossfade consumes a little of the loop’s head, which is why trimming to an exact bar first matters — the seam is designed against a known length.
The same seam is used by live playback and by stem rendering. What you hear during the performance is what lands in the render, so there is no second surprise later.
Step 4: apply as replace, or as a new scene
When the edit is right, you choose:
- Replace — overwrite the clip in place.
- New scene — the edited version lands in a new scene column, and the original stays where it was.
The second option is what makes experimentation free. Try an aggressive trim, send it to a new scene, and compare. There is also 50-step undo and redo covering structural, audio and FX changes if you want to walk it back.
Scenes: performing the arrangement
A scene is a column — one clip per track, launched together.
Launching
Press a scene and every clip in it starts on the next musical boundary. BARS sets how long the launch waits, and the setting persists between sessions.
That quantisation is what makes it a performance instrument. You decide what happens next while the music is playing, and the timing is handled.
Stopping
The first press starts a sample-exact loop-end countdown, so the scene finishes its loop rather than cutting off mid-phrase. Press again for an immediate stop.
The countdown is visible, so you know how long you have before the change.
The dock
The Scene Launch/Stop dock is icon-only and permanently visible. During a performance you do not want to hunt for transport controls, and you do not want them scrolling away with the grid.
Navigating a big grid
- Tracks scroll independently, vertically.
- The scene lane scrolls horizontally, synchronised.
- A persisted setting caps the visible scene columns between one and twelve.
- Scenes beyond that limit stay reachable through a themed right-click menu with Record, Play, Import, Edit, Resample and Delete.
Building an arrangement from one loop
The practical method:
- Record your core loop into scene 1.
- Duplicate to scene 2, then remove something — mute a track, delete a clip.
- Duplicate to scene 3 and change one clip.
- Scene 4 is the full version with one element you have held back.

Practical tips
Record more than you need. Trimming down is easy; extending is not.
Keep loops short. Two or four bars gives you more arrangement options than sixteen, because you can layer and vary them.
Check the seam in context. A join that is inaudible in solo can appear once other tracks are playing, and vice versa.
Name your scenes. By scene nine you will not remember which was the breakdown.
Save often. Session save and load is atomic, so a save either completes or does not happen — but it still has to be triggered.
