When to sidechain kick and bass — and when not to

Sidechain the bass to the kick when they genuinely collide in the same frequency range at the same moment. If they do not collide, sidechaining adds a rhythmic pumping effect and calls it a fix.

That distinction matters, because a lot of low end is ruined by a technique applied out of habit rather than diagnosis.

First, check whether you actually have a collision

Before reaching for a compressor, listen to the kick and bass together with everything else muted.

You have a collision if:

  • the kick loses its impact whenever a bass note lands underneath it;
  • the low end sounds loud on the meter but weak in the room;
  • the combined level jumps every time the two coincide;
  • the bass sounds fine alone and mushy with the kick.

You probably do not have a collision if:

  • the kick is short and mostly transient;
  • the bass sits clearly above or below the kick’s main energy;
  • the bass part rarely lands on the same beat as the kick;
  • the low end already sounds defined.

Do the test at a moderate level, on speakers or headphones you know. Low-end decisions made quietly on small speakers are guesses.

Why the collision happens

Two sources in the same frequency range at the same time do not add up politely. They sum, and the ear does not resolve them as two separate events. This is masking, and it is why a mix can have plenty of low-end energy and still sound like it has none.

The fix is to make sure that only one of them dominates the shared range at any given moment. Sidechain compression is one way to arrange that. It is not the only one, and often not the best one.

How to set kick-to-bass sidechain properly

If you have confirmed the collision, set it like a corrective tool.

  1. Key the bass compressor from the kick. Send the kick to the compressor’s sidechain input, not to its audio input.
  2. Threshold — low enough that every kick triggers it, high enough that nothing else does.
  3. Attack — fast. The duck should coincide with the kick, not arrive after it. A slow attack lets the collision happen and then ducks the aftermath, which is the worst of both.
  4. Release — this is the important one. The bass must return before the next note or the groove develops a hole. Time it to the tempo and listen to the bass on its own with the compressor active.
  5. Amount — a few decibels for clarity. If you are pulling 10 dB, you are producing an effect, not solving a problem. That is fine if it is what you want.
  6. Filter the detector if the plugin allows it, so only the kick’s low energy triggers the duck rather than its click.

Then bypass and compare at matched level. The correct amount is the smallest one that makes the kick audible through the bass.

The better fix in many cases: duck only the shared range

Full-band sidechain ducks the entire bass, including the parts that were never in the kick’s way. The bass loses weight and the harmonics that make it audible on small speakers.

A frequency-specific duck is usually cleverer: reduce only the range where the two overlap, and leave the rest of the bass untouched. A dynamic EQ band keyed from the kick, or a spectral sidechain processor, does this.

Alternatives that need no compressor at all

Try these before assuming sidechain is required.

Separate the ranges. Decide which source owns the sub region and which owns the punch region. Give the kick its fundamental and roll the bass under or over it. Two sources in different ranges do not need to duck at all.

Shorten the kick. A long, ringing kick collides for much longer than a tight one. Shaping its decay solves the overlap directly.

Change the part. If the bass plays a note on every kick, the arrangement is creating the problem. Moving the bass rhythm off the kick on some beats is free and sounds better than any processing.

Automate. A few decibels of volume automation on specific bass notes is precise, predictable, and never pumps where you did not ask it to.

When heavy sidechain is a creative choice

In house, techno, trance and much of modern dance music, obvious pumping is part of the sound. Ducking everything to a four-on-the-floor kick creates the breathing motion the genre is built on.

That is a production decision, not a mix repair. Set it deliberately:

  • duck the pads, synths and sometimes the whole mix, not only the bass;
  • use enough reduction to be clearly audible;
  • shape the release so the return is the groove;
  • keep the kick itself out of the ducked path.

Just be clear with yourself about which of the two you are doing. Corrective sidechain should be inaudible. Creative sidechain should be obvious. The problem is the setting that is neither.

Checking the result

  • Solo the bass with the sidechain active. Does it still play a musical part, or is it full of holes?
  • Play the mix on a small speaker. Is the kick still there when the low end cannot be heard?

If the mix sounds better with the sidechain bypassed, believe that and move on to the arrangement instead. The best low end usually comes from two parts that were never in each other’s way.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always sidechain the bass to the kick?

No. Sidechain when the two genuinely occupy the same frequency range at the same moment and the low end loses definition. If the kick is short and the bass sits in a different range, sidechaining only adds a rhythmic pump you did not need.

What attack and release should I use for kick and bass sidechain?

Attack fast enough that the duck happens with the kick rather than after it, and release timed so the bass returns before the next note or beat. Release is the control that decides whether it sounds musical or obviously pumping.

How much gain reduction is right?

Usually only a few decibels if the goal is clarity. Large reduction becomes an audible effect, which is a legitimate choice in dance music but is no longer a corrective move.
