Using one sound to duck another: how to make space in a mix

Space in a mix is not created by turning things up. It is created by deciding who is allowed to be loud at each moment. Ducking is how you make that decision automatic.
The instinct when a vocal disappears is to raise the vocal. That raises the total energy in the range where the vocal was already being masked, and the mix gets louder without getting clearer. Reducing whatever is in the way works better, and it works at any playback level.
The idea in one sentence
If two sources want the same frequency range at the same time, one of them has to step aside — and it should be the less important one, only while the other is playing.

Method 1: sidechain compression
The classic. A compressor on the ducked source, keyed from the source that should win.
Best for: kick and bass, pads under a lead, a whole mix under a four-on-the-floor kick.
Weakness: it reduces the entire signal, including the frequencies that were never in the way. Duck a pad from a vocal this way and the pad loses its low weight and its air along with the midrange the vocal needed.

Method 2: dynamic EQ keyed from another track
A dynamic EQ band on the ducked source, triggered by the important source, reducing only the shared frequency range.
Best for: almost everything that is not a kick-and-bass relationship. Vocals against guitars, leads against pads, snare against a busy midrange.
Why it is usually better: it removes exactly the collision and nothing else. The guitar keeps its body and its top end and only loses the narrow region where the vocal needed room. The listener hears clarity without hearing an effect.
Setting it: find the range the important source actually occupies — for a lead vocal, typically somewhere between 1 kHz and 4 kHz — put a band there on the other instrument, key it from the vocal, and reduce a few decibels. If you can hear the instrument moving, you have gone too far.

Method 3: volume automation
No processor at all. Draw the reduction where it is needed.
Best for: a handful of specific moments. One guitar phrase that steps on a vocal line. A cymbal that covers a word. A synth that is only in the way during the second chorus.
Why it is underrated: it is exact, predictable, and never behaves oddly on material you did not anticipate. A compressor applies its rule everywhere; automation applies your decision only where you made it.
Weakness: it does not scale. Automating every collision in a dense arrangement is slow, and it breaks when you edit the arrangement afterwards.
Method 4: arrangement
The one nobody wants to hear. If four parts occupy the same octave for the whole song, no amount of ducking will fully fix it, because something is always being reduced.
Move a part up or down an octave. Thin the voicing. Have the pad rest while the vocal sings. Give each element a range it owns.
This is not a mixing trick, it is why some records sound effortless and others sound like they were fought into shape.

How much is right?
For corrective ducking, start at 2–4 dB and only go further if the problem persists. The test is not “can I hear the duck” — it is “can I hear the important source clearly, without noticing anything moving”.
For creative ducking, the answer is different: enough to feel it in your chest. That is a different job with a different target.
Common mistakes

Ducking everything. Ten ducked channels create a mix where nothing is stable. Duck the two or three relationships that matter.
Release too long. The source never fully returns, so the mix loses energy between events without an obvious cause.
Using ducking to fix level. If something is simply too quiet, set its level. Ducking solves a timing and frequency collision, not a balance error.
A working order
- Identify the collision by listening, not by assumption.
- Decide which source must win. There is usually an obvious answer.
- Try the arrangement fix first, if one exists.
- Duck the frequency range, not the whole signal, unless the whole signal is the problem.
- Use the smallest amount that works.
- Bypass and check that the mix is genuinely clearer and not just different.
