How to fix phase problems and get a better mix

There are four fixes for a phase problem, and they cost more as you go down the list. Work through them in order.

If you are not sure you have one, start with what is phase and phase cancellation — the mono test there is how you find out.

Fix 1: flip the polarity

The Ø button. One click, no cost, works surprisingly often.

Use it when two signals are roughly opposite across the range that matters — a top and bottom snare mic, a DI and a mic, two layers that sound hollow together.

How to judge it: listen to both sources together, in mono, and switch. One position will have more low end and more body. Keep that one.

If neither position sounds clearly better, polarity is not your problem — move on.

Limitation: polarity is the same at every frequency. A true timing offset produces a different relationship at every frequency, so a flip can improve one region and worsen another.

Fix 2: align in time

The correct fix when the sources genuinely arrived at different times.

How:

  1. Zoom in on a shared transient — a kick hit, a snare hit, a note attack.
  2. Move one track until its transient lines up with the other’s.
  3. Move the later one earlier, keeping the closest source as the reference.
  4. Check in mono. The low end should return.

Watch for: aligning to one transient can misalign another if the sources drift. On a full performance, align to the most important hit and accept the rest.

Also: anything with lookahead or latency in the chain shifts timing. Do the alignment before adding those, or check afterwards.

Fix 3: rotate the phase

When alignment fixes the transient but the tone still sounds hollow, the sources need a phase relationship somewhere between aligned and inverted.

A polarity switch offers exactly two options. An all-pass filter offers all the positions in between: it changes the phase relationship across frequency without changing the level of any frequency.

How to use it:

  1. Play both sources together, in mono.
  2. Rotate one source’s phase slowly through its range.
  3. Listen for the point of maximum weight and body — it is usually obvious once you sweep past it.
  4. Stop there.

This is the fix that most home mixes never try, and it is often the one that works when the first two do not. SPC Phase Shift is built for it — continuous rotation from −360° to +360° with a zero-latency all-pass path, rather than a single flip.

Fix 4: use one source

The unglamorous option, and frequently the right one.

If two microphones on a source cannot be made to sum well, use the better one. A single good source with no cancellation beats a combined pair with a hole in it, every time.

The same applies to layered samples. Two kicks that fight are worse than one kick that works. Layering is only free when the layers are separated in frequency — see creating space in a mix.

The low-end rule

Keep low frequencies centred and mono.

Long wavelengths mean small differences between channels produce large cancellation when summed. Since a great deal of playback is summed to some degree — phones, club systems, laptop speakers — low-end stereo content is energy you may simply lose.

Watch what your effects are doing

A number of common processors create phase relationships as a side effect:

  • Stereo wideners work by making the channels differ, which is cancellation waiting to happen in mono.
  • Chorus and doubling add delayed copies.
  • Linear-phase EQ avoids phase shift but adds latency and pre-ringing.
  • Minimum-phase EQ — the normal kind — shifts phase around every band you touch, which is usually inaudible and occasionally matters on parallel paths.

None of these are problems by themselves. They become problems when applied to one of two related sources, or when nobody checks mono afterwards.

A working order

  1. Check mono and identify what collapses.
  2. Flip polarity. Keep it if it clearly helps.
  3. Align the transients if the sources are multi-mic or layered.
  4. Rotate the phase to find the best summation point.
  5. Mono the low end.
  6. Drop a layer if it still does not work.
  7. Check mono again and confirm the weight survived.

The habit that prevents most of it

Check mono at the moment you create a layered or widened element, not at the end of the project.

Ten seconds then, versus an hour of forensic work three weeks later on a mix where everything now depends on that sound. Add it to your mixing checklist and it stops being a category of problem you have.

How do I fix phase problems between two microphones?

Try the polarity switch first, since it takes a second. If that does not help, align the tracks in time so the transients line up. If alignment fixes the transient but the tone is still hollow, phase rotation can help where a simple flip cannot.

Should I flip polarity or align in time?

Try polarity first because it is instant and free. Alignment is more precise and is the correct fix when the two signals arrived at genuinely different times, which is the usual case with multiple microphones.

How do I know a phase fix worked?

Sum to mono and compare. The corrected version should keep its weight and body when mono'd rather than thinning out. If it still collapses, the sources may be too different to combine.
