What is phase, and what is phase cancellation?

Phase describes where a waveform is within its repeating cycle. On its own that is a piece of trivia. It becomes important the moment two related signals are combined — because their alignment decides whether they add up or cancel out.
The core idea
Take one sound and make a copy of it.
- Line the copies up exactly and they add. The result is louder.
- Shift one copy by half a cycle at some frequency and, at that frequency, they subtract. The result is quieter, or silent.
Real audio contains many frequencies at once, so a small time offset produces a different amount of cancellation at every frequency. That is why phase problems usually sound like a thin, hollow, filtered version of the sound rather than like simple silence.
Where it comes from in a real session
Multiple microphones on one source. Two mics on a snare are at different distances, so the sound arrives at different times. Combined, they cancel at some frequencies.
Layered samples. Two kicks stacked to make one bigger kick often produce one thinner kick, because their low-frequency content is not aligned.
Stereo widening. Most wideners work by making the channels differ. Summed to mono, those differences cancel — which is exactly why widened material can vanish on a phone.
Delayed copies. Any effect that mixes a delayed version back with the original creates comb filtering. Sometimes deliberate, sometimes not.
Recording a source twice. DI and amp, direct and mic, close and room. All useful, all arriving at different times.
Phase and polarity are not the same thing
They get used interchangeably and they are different.
Polarity is a straight inversion: every positive becomes negative. It is the same at every frequency, and the button marked Ø does it instantly.
Phase is a time relationship, and a fixed time offset produces a different phase shift at every frequency. A late arrival of one millisecond is half a cycle at 500 Hz and a full cycle at 1 kHz.
This is why flipping polarity sometimes fixes a problem instantly and sometimes does nothing useful: it only helps when the two signals are roughly inverted across the range that matters. A true timing difference needs alignment, not a flip.
How to hear it
Sum to mono. This is the test.
In stereo, two channels carrying opposing content sound wide and impressive. Summed, that content subtracts and disappears. Anything that thins out, loses weight or vanishes in mono is cancelling.
Do this early and often. Finding it at the mastering stage means going back — see fix it in the mix or the master.
Watch a correlation meter. It shows how similar the two channels are. Consistently negative values on important material mean trouble. Use it as a pointer, not a verdict — the mono listen decides. See meters vs ears.
Listen for the signature. Combined signals with phase problems sound hollow, small and slightly metallic, and the low end is usually the first thing to go.
Why the low end suffers first
Low frequencies have long wavelengths, so a small physical distance is a large proportion of a cycle down there. A few centimetres between two microphones is enough to remove most of the weight from a kick when they are summed.
It is also why the low end should stay centred and mono in most mixes: content that is not identical in both channels is content that can cancel.
When cancellation is the point
Not all of it is a problem.

The distinction is intent. Cancellation you chose is an effect; cancellation you did not notice is a hole in your mix.
