What is a limiter? Peak control without wrecking the mix

A limiter stops a signal from exceeding a ceiling you set. Technically it is a compressor with a very high ratio and a response fast enough that the output effectively cannot pass the limit.
The interesting part is not the definition. It is what a limiter has to do internally to keep that promise, and what that costs your music.
Limiter, compressor, clipper
All three reduce peaks. They differ in how.

What the controls do
Ceiling
The maximum output level. Nothing exceeds it.
Setting this slightly below full scale is common practice, because encoding to a lossy format can produce peaks higher than the original file measured. That gap is your safety margin.
Threshold or gain
How hard you drive the signal into the ceiling. Lowering the threshold (or raising input gain) means more of the signal is being limited, which means more loudness and more gain reduction.
This one control is the difference between a limiter as a safety net and a limiter as a loudness weapon.
Release
How quickly gain returns after limiting. Too fast produces distortion on low-frequency material; too slow pulls the level down after a peak and the mix breathes oddly.
Many limiters offer automatic or program-dependent release, which adapts to the material and is a reasonable default.
Lookahead
The limiter delays the audio slightly so it can see peaks before they arrive and begin reducing in advance. This makes limiting smoother, at the cost of latency. Your DAW compensates for it, but it matters when tracking.
True peak mode
Standard peak metering reads sample values. The waveform reconstructed by a converter passes between those samples, and can go higher.
True peak limiting oversamples internally to catch those inter-sample overshoots. It costs CPU and it is the difference between a file that measures safe and a file that actually is. The detail is in true peak vs sample peak.
How to use one without ruining the mix
Give it less to do. Every decibel of limiting is a decibel of dynamics you are removing. If the limiter is pulling 6 dB continuously, the problem is upstream: the balance, the low end, or a few uncontrolled peaks.
Handle peaks before the limiter. A single snare hit that is 4 dB above everything else forces the limiter to work on the whole mix to control one sound. Clip gain on that hit, or a compressor before the limiter, means the limiter barely engages.
Watch the gain reduction, not the loudness number. If the meter is constantly moving several decibels, transients are gone. Depth and punch come from transients.
Compare at matched level. Limiting makes things louder, and louder always sounds better for the first ten seconds. Turn the limited version down to match the unlimited one before deciding.

Where a limiter belongs
On the master, last. After everything else, as the final ceiling. Nothing should come after it, because anything after can reintroduce peaks.
On a bus, occasionally. As a safety catch on a drum bus or a synth group that occasionally spikes.
On a channel, rarely. A compressor, clip gain or automation is usually a better fit. A limiter on a channel is a blunt instrument applied to a problem that had a precise solution.
How loud should you push it?
That depends on where the music is going, and it is a bigger topic than limiting alone — how loud should your master be covers the targets and why chasing a number is usually the wrong goal.
The short version: streaming platforms normalise playback level, so a mix crushed to be louder does not end up louder for the listener. It just ends up flatter.
Signs your limiter is doing too much
- The mix sounds smaller when you A/B against the unlimited version at matched level.
- Drums lose impact even though the meter says it is louder.
- The low end sounds wobbly or unstable.
- Distortion appears on sustained bass notes.
- Gain reduction never returns to zero.
Any of those means: reduce the drive, fix the source, and let the limiter go back to being a safety net.

True peak estimates the level of the reconstructed analogue waveform between samples, which can be higher than the highest sample value. A file that never exceeds 0 dBFS by sample can still overshoot after conversion or encoding.
Should I put a limiter on every channel?
