What is a compressor? A producer's guide to every control

A compressor reduces the level of a signal when it gets louder than a level you choose. That is the whole mechanism. Punch, sustain, density and glue are all consequences of that one action combined with turning the result back up.
Understanding it as “automatic level reduction plus makeup gain” removes most of the mystery, and makes the controls obvious.
The controls, one at a time
Threshold
The level above which the compressor starts working. Below it, nothing happens.
Threshold is the control that decides what gets compressed. Set it high and only the loudest peaks are touched. Set it low and most of the performance is being reduced.
Ratio
How firmly the level is reduced once it crosses the threshold. A 4:1 ratio means 4 dB of input above the threshold becomes 1 dB of output above it.

Ratio and threshold are inseparable. A 10:1 ratio with a threshold nothing reaches does nothing. A 2:1 ratio with a very low threshold changes the whole performance.
Attack
How quickly the compressor reduces gain after the signal crosses the threshold.
This is the control that decides how a source hits. A slower attack lets the initial transient through before reduction begins, so the snare still cracks and the note still starts. A fast attack catches the transient, which controls peaks but can flatten impact.
If a drum sounds soft after compression, the attack is probably too fast.
Release
How quickly the compressor stops reducing once the signal falls back below the threshold.
Too fast and you hear the level pumping back up between notes. Too slow and the compressor never recovers, so quiet passages stay reduced and the source sounds squashed and lifeless.
A good starting approach: set release so the gain reduction meter returns to zero roughly in time with the music. On a rhythmic source, that usually means letting it recover between beats.
Knee
How abruptly compression begins around the threshold. A hard knee starts compressing immediately at the threshold. A soft knee eases in over a range, which is generally less audible.
Soft knee for transparent control, hard knee when you want an obvious, defined action.
Makeup gain
Compression makes things quieter. Makeup gain brings the level back up so you can compare fairly.
This is where the illusion lives. A compressed and gain-matched signal sounds controlled. A compressed signal with too much makeup gain sounds better simply because it is louder. Always match levels before deciding a compressor helped.
What compression is actually for
Three legitimate jobs:
Control. A bass or vocal whose level swings 15 dB is hard to place in a mix. Compression narrows that range so one fader setting works for the whole performance.
Shape. Attack and release change how a source’s envelope feels. Slower attack emphasises transients; faster release brings up the sustain and tail. This is how compression adds “punch” or “sustain” — by changing the relationship between the start of a sound and the rest of it.
Character. Some compressors distort, saturate or colour the signal by design. That is a sound-selection decision, not a technical one.
If your reason is none of the three, the compressor may not be needed.
Setting one by ear, step by step
- Bypass everything else and play the busiest section.
- Set ratio moderate — around 3:1 — and attack and release to medium.
- Lower the threshold until the gain reduction meter moves on the loudest parts only. A few decibels is plenty to begin with.
- Adjust attack: does the source still hit the way you want? Slower if it lost punch, faster if peaks are escaping.
- Adjust release: does the level return naturally between phrases or beats? Listen for pumping, then back off.
- Set makeup gain so bypassing produces the same perceived loudness.

Where it belongs in the chain
A compressor reacts to whatever reaches it, so the plugin before it changes its behaviour completely. Removing rumble or a resonance before compression stops the compressor chasing energy you did not want anyway.

When a compressor is the wrong tool
- The problem is one frequency range. Use a dynamic EQ so the rest of the signal is untouched.
- The problem is a few loud moments. Clip gain or automation is more precise and adds nothing.
- The problem is peaks hitting the ceiling. That is a limiter or a clipper.
- The problem is noise between phrases. That is a gate.
Common mistakes
Compressing because the channel exists. Not every source has a dynamic problem.
Judging with unmatched levels. Louder always wins. Match, then judge.
Stacking compressors without reason. Two gentle stages can work better than one aggressive one, but only if each stage has a job you can name.
Setting by numbers. A ratio copied from a preset has no relationship to your source’s dynamic range.

There is no fixed number. A few decibels on a well-recorded source is common for gentle control, more for an obvious effect. Watch whether the gain reduction moves with the music rather than sitting still or flickering randomly.
Do I need a compressor on every channel?
No. Compress sources whose dynamic range genuinely gets in the way, such as vocals, bass and some drums. Many sources in a modern production are already consistent and need nothing.
