Noise gate vs denoise: which cleanup tool should you use?

Use a noise gate when unwanted sound mainly occupies the gaps. Use denoise when noise continues underneath the performance. A gate controls the level of the whole signal according to a threshold; denoise analyzes the unwanted component and attempts to reduce it while preserving wanted audio.
That makes them complementary, not interchangeable.

What a noise gate does
A gate compares a detector signal with a threshold. When the detector rises above the opening threshold, the gate lets the signal through. When it falls below the closing condition, the gate attenuates it.
Common controls include:
- threshold — the level that opens the gate;
- attack — how quickly it opens;
- hold — the minimum time it stays open;
- release — how quickly it closes;
- range — how far the closed signal is turned down;
- hysteresis or return — a separate closing level that reduces flutter;
- detector filters — frequencies that influence triggering.
A gate does not know which sound is “noise.” When a vocal opens it, room noise and hiss on that recording pass through too.
What denoise does
Denoise processing estimates a noise profile or separates statistically noise-like content from wanted content. It can reduce steady hiss, fan noise or room noise underneath a performance.
The tradeoff is artifacts. Heavy processing can make speech or music sound watery, metallic, phasey or incomplete. Some ambience may be desirable; total silence between phrases can sound less natural than a consistent low room tone.
Use lighter reduction, compare bypass at matched level and stop before the cleanup becomes more distracting than the noise.
Four real situations
Vocal in a quiet room with computer-fan noise
If fan noise continues while the singer performs, a gate only hides it between phrases. Start with gentle denoise. Then use editing or a soft expander for the remaining gaps if needed.
Tom microphones with cymbal bleed
A detector filter can focus a gate on the tom’s useful range so cymbals are less likely to hold it open. Preserve the initial transient with an appropriate attack or lookahead, and make the release long enough for the drum decay.
Electric guitar amp hiss
For stops between phrases, a gate can be effective. For a sustained note with hiss beneath it, denoise may help, but aggressive reduction can damage the guitar’s high-frequency texture. Fix cables, gain staging or the noise source before relying on repair.
Spoken dialogue with changing ambience
Manual region gain and room-tone editing may be more transparent than a gate that opens and closes audibly. Denoise can reduce steady components, while spectral repair may be better for isolated sounds.
When to combine them
A sensible combined chain is:
- remove isolated clicks, hum or obvious edits with the correct specialized method;
- apply modest denoise to lower overlapping steady noise;
- use a gentle expander or gate to reduce the remaining floor in gaps;
- audition the result in the full production.
Because each stage does less, the result can sound more natural than one processor pushed hard.
When neither is the right tool
- Re-record when the source is badly distorted or the room overwhelms it.
- Use de-click for clicks and mouth noises.
- Use de-hum for stable mains-frequency hum and harmonics.
- Edit or automate a handful of obvious gaps manually.
- Fix arrangement or microphone placement when bleed is avoidable.
Choose by asking one question
Play a section where the wanted sound is active. If the noise is still audible, a gate cannot selectively remove it because the gate must be open. That points toward denoise or repair. If the problem exists mainly in the spaces between wanted events, gating, expansion or editing is the natural starting point.
